How to Lose Weight After Having A Baby

Breastfeeding helps melt off the pounds in record time!

Don't we all dream of being able to snap back into shape the moment our beautiful babies are born? It’s every mum's dream to lose all the extra pregnancy pounds ASAP!

The hard truth is no one (not even famous people) snaps back to her pre-baby body so quickly. So let's keep it real and try and keep our expectations in check. Depending on the size of your newborn (usually between five and 10 pounds) and precise weight of your amniotic fluid and placenta (which you deliver at birth), most pregnant women can lose up to 5kg (12 pounds) during delivery. Considering the average pregnancy weight gain could be up to 25kg (30 pounds++), that’s a great way to start!

Don't get despondent! Remember to stay healthy (eat plenty of whole foods, fruit and vegetables and steer clear of sugary processed foods). And try and get some fresh air and exercise when you can. It's good for you and good for baby!

Here are a few bullet-point tips which might help: (don't stress too much)

After you deliver, you will slowly lose weight.
You may want to speed things along by working with your doctor to set a safe, reasonable goal. A good rule of thumb is to lose no more than one and a half pounds per week (that is, a calorie deficit of 3,500 to 5,250 calories per week, or 500 to 750 a day).

Breast Feeding Melts the Pounds!
Although shedding 10, 20 or more pounds post-baby might seem insurmountable, it may take less “work” than you might think. That’s because, as many new moms will attest, breastfeeding helps melt off the pounds in record time.

Give yourself six weeks before you start dieting
Since your body needs lots of rest (good luck with that!) and nutrition to recover from delivery, fend off infection and feed your baby, you shouldn’t even think about dieting until your baby is six weeks old.
